Step 1: Online Registration

  • First, you need to visit the official websIte of Indian Government’s.  Website: ociservices.gov.in

Note: Payment is usually accepted by debit card.

Do you need a PIO card for returning to the US?

No, you do not need a PIO card to return to the US. A valid American passport is sufficient for US entry. However, you should keep the following in mind when traveling:

1. For US Entry (Return to USA):Only US Passport Required: You are an American citizen, so US Immigration (CBP) will only check your valid passport. Your PIO or OCI card does not matter to them.

2. For Exit from India (Leaving India):OCI is Mandatory: When you leave India, Indian Immigration checks the document you were using in India. PIO Problem: Since it is now April 2026, the travel validity of handwritten PIO cards expired on December 31, 2025.

3. Current Status: If you do not yet have an OCI card, Indian immigration may detain you at the time of exit or impose a fine on you. Therefore, if you are in India, immediately contact the FRRO or apply for an OCI.
